Your bank statement password is almost always described in the email the statement came with. Formats vary by bank, by statement type and over time, but most combine the first four letters of your name, your date of birth, a customer ID or part of your card number. The table below lists formats we could trace to a source.

When you have the password, Unlock PDF saves a copy without it so you can upload it to a loan or visa portal. It runs in your browser, so your statement is never uploaded.

Checked on 15 October 2026. Banks change these formats without notice. If your email or app shows a different hint, follow the hint.

Step 1: check the email first

Before guessing, open the email that delivered the statement and scroll to the bottom. Banks usually write something like “Your statement is password protected. The password is…” followed by the format. Also check:

  • The net banking or app download screen, which sometimes shows a hint.
  • The bank’s SMS if the statement was sent by SMS link.
  • Whether it is a savings account statement or a credit card statement. These often use different formats.

Password formats by bank

“Official” means the bank’s own website states it. “Reported” means it comes from finance or tax sites, which sometimes disagree. Where sources disagree, we list each format they give.

Credit card statements

Bank Format Example Status Source
Axis Bank First 4 letters of name in CAPITALS (as on the statement, ignore spaces and dots) + 4 digits of date of birth ROHI1004 Official Axis Bank support
Axis Bank (alternative) First 4 letters of name in CAPITALS + 9-digit customer ID ROHI123456789 Official Axis Bank support
ICICI Bank Last 4 digits of your credit card number 4321 Official ICICI Bank
SBI Card First 4 letters of name in CAPITALS + date of birth as DDMM RAKU1503 Reported Adobe India
HDFC Bank First 4 letters of name in small letters + date of birth as DDMM priy0901 Reported Adobe India
HDFC Bank (alternative) First 4 letters of name in CAPITALS + last 4 digits of card PRIY4321 Reported Airtel

For Axis, “4 digits of your date of birth” is usually read as DDMM, but the bank’s page does not spell out the order. If DDMM fails, try MMDD.

Savings and current account statements

Bank Format Example Status Source
SBI (emailed statement) Last 5 digits of registered mobile number + date of birth as DDMMYY 12345110290 Reported WPS
HDFC Bank Customer ID 12345678 Reported BankConv
HDFC Bank (alternative) Date of birth as DDMMYYYY 22071985 Reported BankConv
ICICI Bank (emailed statement) First 4 letters of name + date of birth as DDMM (try lower case, then capitals) vive0102 Reported BankConv
Axis Bank First 4 letters of name in CAPITALS + date of birth as DDMM AMIT0305 Reported BankConv
Kotak Mahindra Bank CRN (Customer Relationship Number) 123456789 Reported LoansJagat

Where sources disagree:

  • SBI: some sites give the mobile-plus-DDMMYY format above, others give date of birth as DDMMYYYY, or name letters plus date of birth. Statements from the YONO app, net banking and email may use different formats (WPS lists several). For SBI Card, sources disagree on whether the name letters are capitals or small letters, so try both.
  • HDFC credit card: sources give two different formats (name + DDMM, or name + last 4 card digits). Try both.
  • Kotak: most sources say CRN, but at least one says date of birth as DDMMYYYY. Try both. Your CRN is the number you use to log in to Kotak net banking. LoansJagat says you can also get it by sending “CRN” by SMS to 9971056767 or 5676788 from your registered mobile. Confirm the number in the Kotak app before you send it.

For joint accounts, use the first account holder’s details. For company accounts, use the date of incorporation instead of date of birth.

When nothing works

  1. Copy your name exactly as the bank has it. “Mohd” and “Mohammed” give different passwords, and so do initials.
  2. Try capitals and small letters. Some banks use one, some the other.
  3. Check the date format. DDMM, DDMMYY and DDMMYYYY are all in use. The day always comes first in Indian bank formats.
  4. Use the details the bank has on file, such as the mobile number registered with the bank (not your current one, if you changed it).
  5. Download the statement again from net banking or the app. The download may use a different, simpler format.
  6. Call the bank. Customer care can tell you the format. They will never need your full password, OTP or PIN, so don’t share those.

There is no legitimate way to open a statement without the password. Sites that claim to “crack” bank PDFs are a privacy risk, and you would be handing them your account history.

Remove the password for uploads

Loan, visa and rental portals often reject password-protected PDFs. To make an unlocked copy:

  1. Open Unlock PDF on your phone or computer.
  2. Add the statement.
  3. Type the password once.
  4. Download the unlocked copy and upload that.

PDFToast does this inside your browser. Your statement is not sent to our servers. Here is how to check any PDF site in 30 seconds.

Share it safely afterwards

An unlocked statement shows your balance, transactions and account number to anyone who opens it.

  • Email it with a password. Protect PDF adds a new password you choose. Send the password by SMS or a call, not in the same email.
  • Hide what isn’t needed. A landlord rarely needs every transaction. Redact PDF permanently removes account numbers or specific lines.
  • Delete the unlocked copy from your Downloads when you’re done.

Questions

Where do I find my bank statement password?

Look in the email the statement came with. Indian banks usually describe the password format in the email body, often near the bottom. That hint is more reliable than any list online, including this one.

Why are there different answers online for the same bank?

Banks use different formats for savings account statements, credit card statements, net banking downloads and emailed statements, and they change them over time. Two people can both be right for different statements.

Can I remove the password from a bank statement?

Yes, if you know the password. Open the file with it and save an unlocked copy. Keep that copy private and add a new password before you email it to anyone.

Is it safe to unlock a bank statement on a website?

Only if the site does not upload the file. PDFToast unlocks the statement inside your browser, so it never reaches a server.
